Parenting coordination is a process to assist coparents in navigating the day to day of coparenting life. As an alternative to consulting with attorneys or going to court, coparents can work with a Parenting Coordinator ("PC") who will provide parents with child-focused education, case management, and guidance in decision-making. The goal of parenting coordination is to increase the likelihood that coparents find ways to work together to minimize ongoing conflict for their children.
Families that utilize the Parenting Coordination process usually have a history of coparenting disagreements that often involve their children. Sometimes, there are other factors that make the agreement process more difficult such as mental health concerns, substance abuse, or children with special needs. Families will sometimes begin Parenting Coordination services due to a recommendation from a Custody Evaluation or by an Order from the Court. At other times, a family may seek assistance through Parenting Coordination when the parenting plan needs to be changed.
A Parent Coordinator is a trained professional who has experience working with separated families and coparents. The PC will help coparents implement their parenting plan, resolve child-related disagreements, refocus on the child's needs, improve communication, problem-solving, and parenting skills, and stabilize the family.
Some of the topics that often come up in parenting coordination include parenting time schedules, coparenting communication, child's extracurricular activities, education, childcare, healthcare, parenting roles, discipline, and significant others.
During an intake process, each parent will submit requested documentation and meet with the PC individually. After the individual meetings, coparents will begin meeting with the PC together to identify areas of disagreement, possible pathways or options for resolution, and agreements. In the beginning of the process, meetings with the PC may occur on a regular basis, and are often more frequent. As the process continues and coparents improve working together, meetings with the PC may be scheduled on an as-needed basis.
